Exes Charlize Theron and Sean Penn had an uncomfortable reunion at the Cannes film festival on Friday, May 20. This is the first time the former couple — who were promoting their new movie, The Last Face — appeared together in public since calling off their engagement in June 2015.

During a Cannes photocall, Charlize, 40, and Sean, 55, kept their distance by ensuring several of their costars separated them during cast pictures. The duo additionally refrained from interacting at a The Last Face press Q&A later in the day.

But, the pair did surprisingly acknowledge each other with a painful-looking kiss Friday evening when they again came together on the movie’s premiere red carpet. So cringe-worthy!

The Monster star and Sean — who were previously rumored to be engaged — began dating in early 2014 and ended their relationship just more than a year later. “We were in a relationship and then it didn’t work anymore. And we both decided to separate. That’s it,” Charlize said following their split.
